Sneak Peak at New Gear for 2012

Want to get a look at some of the best new gear on the planet? Stephen Regenold and his Gear Junkie Team canvassed the aisles at this month’s Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City and recently posted his “Best in Show” report for soon-to-be-released 2012 new products. Regenold’s opinion: “These products represent true innovation in the outdoors industry and some of the neatest new gear ever made.”

Eric Wyncoop on his Dahon Speed Uno folding bike

Eric Wyncoop of Beaverton, Ore. is the winner of the Dahon Speed Uno, a contest sponsored this year by Outdoors NW magazine and presented by Dahon Folding Bikes.

Eric is a chef instructor and food anthropologist in Portland. He commutes to his offices by MAX light rail and incorporates his Dahon Uno in his mix of bicycling and commuting. While most of his miles have covered the urban commute and weekend tours, Eric has enjoyed cyclo-camping on the Oregon coast, riding the rural roads of Japan, and bumping along the cobblestone streets of colonial Mexico. He lives with his wife and son and his favorite bike shop is Coventry Cycles.

 

New trail links south Lake Washington

A new 2,011-foot trail link in Renton recently opened, connecting the Cedar River Trail to the Lake Washington Trail along Logan Avenue. This 12-foot wide section is the second phase that will eventually connect more than 52 miles of trails for pedestrians and cyclists. The trail may be accessed from Logan Avenue between North 6th Street and Airport Way in Renton.

Port Angeles hosts Senior Games

The 2011 Olympic Peninsula Senior Games is scheduled Aug. 26-27 with 18 sports on the docket. Those 50 and older are encouraged to participate in such sports as basketball, bocce, bowling, bridge, cribbage, cycling, golf, recreational horseshoes, indoor rowing, pickleball, pinochle, racquetball, 5K and 10K run, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field and volleyball. Participation is free.

Seattle Dragon Boat Festival at Stan Sayres Park

dragon boat race imageTeam Survivor NW (TSNW) will host Seattle Celebrating Life! Dragon Boat Festival, Saturday, Sept. 3 at Seattle’s Stan Sayres Memorial Park on Lake Washington. Come watch the ceremonial dotting of the dragon’s eyes which kicks off the festival followed by plenty of race action on the lake. The festival is sponsored by TSNW, a non-profit organization supporting women in their cancer recovery through fitness and health education. Competitive, recreational and those new to dragon boat racing are encouraged to participate!

Project Athena Seattle supports cancer survivors

project athena logoThe Project Athena Race Series is coming to Seattle Oct. 1 and three Seattle women cancer survivors will be chosen for an “Athena-ship” to one of Project Athena’s 2012 Adventure trips. Even if you don’t win, entry to the 10k run, 5k Adventure Hike at Redmond’s Marymoor Park is free to survivors. All entry fees will help support local survivors who live in your community as well as on a national level by providing Athena-ship grants that help women live their adventurous dreams. Bring the family – there is also a kids 1k fun run.

Show your “Native Spirit” in Hood River

Native Eyewear will be in Hood River, Ore. today through Sunday to work with local writers, videographers and photographers in the creation of the next Native Eyewear collaboration between the on-the-ground adventurists and the tales they tell. The eyewear company will be gathering the stories and putting the images, adventures and excitement into next year’s marketing plans and celebrating the lifestyle of places that embody what they call the Native Spirit from the Hood.

Birds of Prey on Labor Day

With the beautiful Columbia River Gorge as a backdrop, guests and visitors to Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Wash. can get “up close and personal” with some of the most magnificent birds in the world and learn about the important role they play in the environment. This crowd-pleasing event has taken place every weekend this summer and will culminate with four shows on Labor Day weekend.

This is the second year the Lodge has offered the Birds of Prey Program. Guests and day visitors are invited to the Grand Lawn of the Lodge to learn the natural history, stewardship and the importance of these amazing creatures in the environment. There will be up to eight different raptors, including a Bald Eagle, Barn Owl and a Ferruginous Hawk. Raptor House is a nonprofit company that rescues injured wild birds and returns them to the wild.

Show times are scheduled for: 5 p.m., Friday; 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Saturday; and noon Sunday.
