Our Northwest SnowSports issue is out on the stands! You can get it at our Pickup Point of the Month, Mini Mountain in Bellevue, Wash. Mini Mountain has taught millions of lessons to thousands of people since it opened in Northgate in 1980. It’s been in the Bellevue location since 1983. We stopped by to talk with Owner Tom Waldron and get a tour of the indoor ski facility, where folks can try skiing on one of Mini Mountain’s three giant rolling slopes or learn how to get on and off a chairlift. (Yes, they’ve got one!)

Q: Why go to Mini Mountain?

A: Some huge percent of adults who try skiing only go once. With our skiers, it’s the reverse. They have success that first day and want to go back. That’s what Mini Mountain is all about—having that first day on the slope be a success.

Q: What about the kids?

A: Well we started out with just adults, doing ski-robics, a kind of ski conditioning, but then they all asked for their kids to come.

Q: So how would a beginner package of lessons work for kids?

A: For ages four and five, they do 12 lessons inside, then we get them on the snow. Our ski school hut is at Summit West. For ages six and up, they do six indoor lessons, then hit the slopes. The first day, they realize they can go right up the chairlift and start skiing. Last year, we had two six-year-old girls who did our lessons, and on their first night up at Summit, they took 20 runs each.
