Our Pickup Point of the Month is Bike N Hike, in Portland, Ore. Bike N Hike has six locations in Oregon, and is a Northwest favorite. We stopped by to talk to President Kevin Chudy, who has worked at the shop since he was 15. It’s been his sole place of employment since then.
Q: Tell us your thoughts on working at Bike N Hike since 1973, when you were 15 years old. What has changed in the bike industry since then?
A: Everything has changed. The bikes are more sophisticated with better shifting and the overall quality has improved greatly. I believe our customers have also improved. They are better educated and understand the wide-spread benefits to improving personal health by cycling.
Q: What advice do you have for our readers on how to get a proper bike fit?
A: I would suggest starting with a visit to your local bike store. It has been my overall experience that staff members know how to set up a rider with a basic fit. I would describe this as setting the seat height and handlebar position. We often improve a client’s overall comfort with just a few minor adjustments. We also have a professional fitting service that we offer in our Beaverton and Portland locations. This service goes into much more detail and often provides the client with a much greater level of satisfaction.
My advice, go to the professionals for a better fit on your bike.
Q: What’s your favorite ride and why?
A: I love riding my bike. I’m happy riding alone or with others. I have the joy of riding my road bike in the mid-Willamette Valley. I enjoy the quiet, low-traffic roads and it reminds me of my youth, growing up in Albany/Corvallis.
Q: What is your favorite thing about NW Cyclist?
A: I like the local connection. I enjoy learning how other people embrace cycling.
