Editor’s Note: What are you training for?

One of the cool things about working at OutdoorsNW is that our office is a hub of event news and enthusiasm. There are the expos and tradeshows that we go to, of course, but it’s particularly inspiring to find out what other staffers are training for from season to season.

Carolyn Price

Climb for a cause

Publisher Carolyn Price trains every year for the Big Climb for Leukemia, which takes place in late March. It is 1,311 steps up the Columbia Tower and training usually starts in December on many of the staircases in Seattle. Mind you, this is a walk up the stairs and usually takes her about 20 minutes; unlike her teenage nephews who can clock it under 8 minutes. The Climb is a Price Family tradition and a tribute to Carolyn’s nephew Trevor, who died of leukemia at age 12 in 2002.

Patty Holmquist

City-to-city cyclists

Senior account executive Patty Holmquist is getting her cycling muscles in top shape for the RSVP—also known as Ride from Seattle to Vancouver (BC) and Party! She’ll be riding the two-day, 188-mile trek in mid-August with her husband, Steve, and sons, Will (age 22) and Christian (age 20); all three of the men in her life did the STP last year. Patty has been logging indoor miles this spring on a stationary bike and outdoors uses an App called Cyclemeter to track distance, pace, elevation gains and calories. She’s also doing light strength training and looking for a couple of lengthy rides in June to help her prepare.

Frankie O'Rourke

Account executive Frankie O’Rourke is in on the cycling mojo, too. While she isn’t officially training for an event right now, she can often be found on her bike during summer weather and is looking forward to fall bicycle touring. Those century rides are looking good!

Running? More like funning

Event specialist Devon Haight plans to run in the Seahawks 12k—to the surprise of no one. (Go Hawks!) He also plans to enjoy any 5k runs that pique his interest throughout the summer.

Not to be left out of the running fun, my husband and I are training for the San Francisco Marathon this July. We’ve been steadily ramping up mileage since the end of January and are becoming all too familiar with Seattle’s steepest hills.

Someone has to do it

Chuck Schultz

Last but not least, art director Chuck Schultz and co-publisher Greg Price are hard at work training for beer fests. What a sport. Chuck is primarily interested in the challenges provided by the Seattle and Portland International Beer Festivals in July and August, and is confident that he’ll be in pretty great shape after Seattle Beer Week in May.

So, what are you training for? If you haven’t decided, this edition—packed to the brim with more than 1,000 outdoor events—is sure to provide you with some inspiration of your own for the coming year.
