Women leaders in the outdoors industry are transforming their roles in the industry and REI’s CEO, Jerry Stritzke, announced at the Outdoor Industries Women’s Coalition (OIWC) awards banquet in January that REI is backing this growth with a $1.5 million Mary Anderson Legacy Grant.

Mary and Lloyd Anderson co-founded REI in 1938. As one of the company’s first leaders, Mary helped frame what today is the country’s largest outdoor consumer co-op and a community of more than 5 million active members. This grant is a catalyst to unleash the talent of women and spur ideas and programs that will provide mentorship, valuable research, tools, best practices and resources to better serve women leaders.

“Companies with more women leaders also enjoy strong financial performance,” says Deanne Buck, executive director of the OIWC. “One of the biggest challenges facing outdoor companies is competition for high-quality talent. This grant will give us the momentum we need to make the outdoor industry the employer of choice for women.”
