Heroes Half
A run to celebrate heroes among us

In 2010, the Heroes Half and 10k debuted with the laudable goal of raising funds for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A successful run, it circumnavigated Seattle’s Lake Union. However, going into the second year, race officials were looking to expand the number of runners and Lake Union route was too tight. They looked for a new route and found a winner in Everett.
“The course potential was just crazy,” says race director Lynne Hoskins. “The whole community got involved, including the City of Everett, the Port of Everett, Snohomish County Tourism Promotion, City of Marysville, and Naval Station Everett as well.”
The result is one of the best new courses on the calendar. It starts and finishes at Port Gardner Landing, and crosses 4 bridges, following (appropriately) the Yellow Ribbon Highway over the Snohomish River Wetlands from the Port of Everett to Marysville. Two lanes of the highway will be closed, so it will be a roomy and scenic closed course.
By moving the race to Everett, the term “Heroes” took on another meaning, besides the initial one of the fundraising heroes at St. Jude’s. The start and finish are near the naval base, and race officials expect a large turnout of active and veteran military members, all of whom will receive discounted registration. The race encourages friendly competition between the groups by offering team challenges for military, first responder or corporate teams.
Best of all, all proceeds still benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. You can be a hero yourself, just by signing up for the April 29 event.
