Washington, D.C.

Seattle-based company, K2 Sports, joined forces with Protect Our Winters (POW), the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and 15 snow brands and pro athletes to meet with Washington officials on the issue of climate change on Oct. 8.

The group of high-profile leaders and athletes in the outdoor and snow-sports industries spoke with senators from states known for winter sports, including Washington, Alaska and Montana.

After a series of meetings, the group held a press conference hosted by California congressman Henry Waxman outside the U.S. Capitol and led a discussion on topics related to the world’s shrinking snowpack.

“The changing climate directly impacts the livelihood of our employees, athletes, retailers, the recreation of our customers and the health of our business,” said Matt O’Laughlin, senior engineer at K2 Skis and head of its sustainability team. “It should be apparent as we stand side-by-side with industry peers, that this is a serious situation that affects all of us across the board.”

The group advocated to support the President’s Climate Action Plan as well as the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Carbon Pollution Standard released on Sept. 20, 2013.

Among the day’s many meetings, O’Laughlin was able to discuss the impacts on Washington State with Senator Patty Murray’s staff.
