Our Pickup Point of the Month is Fleet Feet in Tacoma’s north end, located at 3812 N. 26th Street.  Opened in October 2012, it’s the South Sound hub of all things running. Swing by to get fitted for a great pair of running shoes or take advantage of one of their training programs or group runs. We recently stopped by to talk to manager Jena Winger.

Q: Why is Fleet Feet different than your average shoe store?

A: One of our main philosophies is reaching out to all types of runners, or walkers, or anyone who just needs a good pair of shoes. So we really try to have a welcoming atmosphere.

Q: Why is finding the right shoe so important?

A: Having shoes that are doing the wrong thing for you are going to lead to injury, which discourages general fitness. There are studies that show if you go too far on the spectrum of motion control, it will lead to an injury. Whereas, staying away from that, going to less of a shoe, won’t hurt you. I’ve had people come in and say, “Oh my gosh! This is the most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn,” and they’re going to want to go out and run.

Q: Where is your favorite place to run?

A: Well, I spent the last few years in Portland, so around there it’s definitely Forest Park or on the waterfront. I live on the waterfront in Tacoma so I like going there, and of course, Point Defiance.

Q: What advice do you have for new runners?

A: The biggest part is not doing too much, too soon. Having the right equipment is important too. Take it step by step and while it’s good to get advice from others, go at your own pace! Have a plan.

Q: What do you like best about Outdoors NW magazine?

A: It provides a different viewpoint for people who come into our store. There’s so much that focuses on elites and beginners. Outdoors NW provides a completely different perspective. We have a lot of people interested in running, hiking, and trail running. We’re definitely growing our trail running inventory.
