Get a fresh start and some fresh air with Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission during its annual First Day Hikes on Jan. 1.
“First Day Hikes are a great way for families and individuals to enjoy, appreciate and support their Washington state parks,” says Don Hoch, Washington State Parks director. “This is a way that families can create a new memorable New Year’s Day tradition.”
Fifteen Washington State Parks are participating in this year’s festivities, providing programing and guided tours for park visitors that span a range of interests.
Have your camera at the ready for the view of the Saratoga Passage at Cama Beach State Park on Camano Island or of Strawberry and Ben Ure islands from Deception Pass State Park in Oak Harbor.
Explore out-of-commission military structures and bunkers at Fort Flagler State Park on Marrowstone Island or Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend. Don’t forget a flashlight!
Maybe you’d prefer a family trail run? Head over to Millersylvania State Park in Olympia for 3.8 miles of trails that weave through spectacular old-growth forest.
Stargazers will be interested to know they can enjoy an evening hike followed by an interpretive session in the observatory in Goldendale Observatory State Park in Goldendale.
Options for those looking for a snowy adventure could take a day trip to Lake Wenatchee State Park near Leavenworth, Mt. Spokane State Park in Mead or Riverside State Park in Spokane.
That’s just the beginning.
