A Genuine Western Treasure

The words “best ski town” and “Whitefish” are often heard together. In fact, Whitefish Mountain Resort was named one of the best 25 Ski Towns in the world by National Geographic in 2012.

There’s more than just the world-class ski area of Whitefish that draws visitors to this amazing northern Rocky Mountain town: It’s the gateway to Glacier National Park and a thriving town in its own right. Whitefish Lake is located just two miles west of town, and is visible from much of the ski area. A stop at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake for dinner or just a drink is well worth it.

Downtown Whitefish is just a few square blocks, but it packs a lot to see in that area for visitors. It’s an authentic western town without being kitschy or fake. It’s still a railroad town at heart, and the Burlington Northern switching facility of the BNSF Railway Company still employs a lot of locals. Even if you don’t come by train, the historic depot is worth a stop. Stroll through the town and check out the numerous unique shops. Whitefish has more in the way of art, pottery and handcrafted items than cheesy t-shirts or tourist items. It’s a genuine Western treasure.

Dining options

Where to start? Whitefish has a range of dining options you’d expect from a much bigger resort town.

We loved the “Mountain Mexican” specialty plates at Pescado Blanco, where we feasted on elk chorizo and bison enchiladas. Wait for a table—you’ll be glad you did. Same at Wasabi, the sushi place. Plan on being patient, but good things come to those who wait.

The Tupelo Grill has great Cajun options and for a quick meal with the kids, the Naked Noodle had tons of options. All good.

No matter where you dine, save room for dessert. Don’t miss the homemade ice cream at Sweet Peaks, which boasts everyday flavors such as local huckleberry, and specialties like maple bacon.

Drinking options

A fantastic craft brewery, the Great Northern Brewing Company, sits opposite the historic train depot. Stop in to the Black Star Draught Room for a pint of their Going to the Sun IPA or one of their other terrific brews. Don’t confuse them with the Great Northern Bar and Grill, which is a classic Montana not-to-be-missed saloon up the street. Here you can get your fix of pool or ping pong, grab some food and listen to some live music.

Entertainment options

Whitefish has a thriving community theater right in town, and there is usually a great local production playing, for those who prefer that to the bar scene. They also bring in some terrific national touring theater as well.

If you need some physical activity but need a break from the slopes, a community ice rink is right up the road. We rented some skates and spent the afternoon with the kids on the ice, which thrilled them.

There are more options farther afield, such as horse-drawn sleigh rides at the Bar W Guest Ranch—we’d hoped to try this, but the thin snowfall in late March nixed that idea. There are other outdoor options, like snowmobile or dogsledding tours. For those who like indoor pursuits, the Spa at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake has decadent options.

Exploring Whitefish, the town, is a great option for skiers—and for those who love skiers but don’t want to be sitting in a day lodge waiting. It’s a town that truly is a destination even without the world-class ski area up the mountain. Don’t miss it.
