World Water Day, a date that was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, is scheduled for March 22. The day is devoted to implementing UN recommendations and promoting concrete activities that will protect or improve the world’s water resources.

Tourism industry leaders will launch Travelers Against Plastic (TAP) Campaign to encourage tourism and hospitality leaders to educate travelers and guests about the environmental impacts of purchasing bottled water in disposable plastic bottles while travelling. Crooked Trails, a Seattle-based non-profit, will spearhead the TAP Campaign.

Just think: in the U.S. alone, making bottles of water out of plastic takes more than 1.5 million barrels of oil every year. That’s enough to fuel 100,000 American cars for a year.

No wonder I pack my own water instead of buying into the bottled water craze.
