Two groups, Newberry National Volcanic Monument and Discover Your Forest, will host volunteer and educational activities in celebration of National Public Lands Day on Sept. 28.

Visitors to the National Monument are invited to work on restoration projects near the Lava Lands Visitor Center or on trails at Newberry Caldera – or simply enjoy a guided exploration of Lava River Cave.

There will be a birds of prey touch table sponsored by Sunriver Nature Center, an archeological talk with Deschutes National Forest archeologist Erin Woodard and a photo workshop with professional photographer Kevin Sperl.

Youth can enjoy Junior Forest Ranger programing, including a thunder egg hunt, a puppet show and lessons on geology, plants and conservation.

Free lunches will be provided to trail-maintenance volunteers and Junior Forest Ranger participants, courtesy of Whole Foods, Bend, Ore.

As part of National Public Lands Day, all recreation pass fees will be waived at the National Monument as well as at all Deschutes National Forest day-use areas.

Similar activities will occur nationwide on Sept. 28. Search for events in other National Forests by visiting www.publiclandsday.org.
