Backcountry.com will hold a series of local avalanche safety workshops for women in December – including two Northwest classes on Dec. 14 in Crystal Mountain, Wash., and on Dec. 15 at Stevens Pass, Wash.

The workshops, dubbed Skiers Advocating and Fostering Education for Avalanche and Snow Safety (SAFE-AS), are taught by professional athletes and snow-science educators. Each of the one-day workshops feature morning yoga, classroom and field training, rescue scenarios, a healthy lunch, skiing and snowboarding and an after-party with fun raffle prizes.

The cost to attend a workshop is $110 per participant, and a portion of proceeds will benefit the Northwest Avalanche Center. A limit of 30 women, age 14 and older, can attend each event. Each participant must bring her own avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and backpack.
